I believe that Google Fiber will provide a key element in continuing San Joses economic growth. It will provide badly needed competition for the present internet data and cable TV service providers and has resulted in lower prices and improved quality of services, in other Google Fiber locations.
It may also allow more residents to effectively telecommute, to work. Hopefully reducing the daily morning and evening commute congestion.

Google has provided several plans including a low speed service (5 Mbps down, 1 Mbps up) for an installation charge (lump sum $300 or $25 per month for 12 months) for a 7 year period, effectively $3 a month. This is a benefit for San Jose lower income residents and seniors.

This is an example Google Fiber Hut, installed in Charlotte NC. There would be 8 huts when San Jose is completely served. More photos available here. Google brochure/web pages here.
The following map shows the initial locations that Google has submitted for approval, by the San Jose Planning Commission.
